Art History

I was contacted to by a young photographer by the name of Genevieve Blais back in early February of this year to do some makeup. I was told that conceptually she was aiming to blur the lines of famous art history portraiture in an unsettling way. I gladly accepted after looking through her website thinking that the images would be something I could add to my portfolio.

I was quick to realize that this was going to be bigger than a couple of prints. However I was not at all prepared for what was about to unfold into many months of collaborative effort, artistic freedom, fast makeup application, frantic lookouts while shooting nudity in public wedding venues, late nights, prosecco and ultimately a series of images that sends chills down my spine.

Red Carpet Ready | Client

It's TIFF time in Toronto and with it comes a slew of parties and red carpet photo ops. I recently did the hair and make-up for Nolan Bryant who was among those being honoured at the Toronto Life Most Stylish party at the newly opened Shang-Ri La Hotel. He wanted to keep the make-up minimal and fresh as not to compete with the evening's outfit so I focused primarily on creating bright dewy skin with some sculpting and a defined brow. When it came to hair we decided on his signature side parted and swept waves, this was achieved with a 2 inch barrel curling iron and plenty of back combing!

The following evening I worked with Nolan again to create a look for the AmFar Cinema Against AIDS Gala that he was attending. He wanted something different from the previous night so we decided on an elaborate and sculptural up-do and more intense make-up look to compliment the understated outfit.

Acrylic Dysmorphia

I recently stumbled upon a blog created by a Japanese university student who blogs by the name of  Chooooosan. Using acrylic paints he has created some very twisted looking faces and I figured why not give it a shot.

Send me your versions via twitter! @JosephHinds

Snake Skin

A few weeks ago I was approached by a photography student asking if I could come up with a look for his final portfolio shoot.

My Goal: to turn the model into a snake.

I tried multiple techniques attempting to find the right texture including layering oatmeal onto liquid latex to create a scaly texture.
In the end nothing was comparable to the effect I managed to achieve using a pair of fishnet stockings and copious amounts and layering of green and gold pigments.

In the end, I think I achieved my goal with success .
You can see the transformation from girl to snake below.

Halloween

Halloween is fast approaching which means many of us will be scrambling to come up with a costume that will top last years. This year I have decided to ditch the costume and have picked up my make-up instead...

Now, there are a few reasons for this... One: so that I can save the money on something that I will only end up wearing once... and Two: I have never really been one to dress up in your standard Halloween costume anyway. So for the past week I have been trying out a bunch of different "looks" in hopes of finding one that I will want to wear out on All Hallows Eve. Here is my favourite look so far:
