posterior excavation of the vertebral body

bronze , wax , oil paint & linen in antique frame

This work for me was an exploration of materials vs human function ; as bone and skin mimic bronze and wax , both requiring protection from external elements to prevent deterioration . The spine is a symbol of strength and stability - six vertebrae for my six immediate family , whose support allows me to stand strong . By placing this work within the confines of an antique frame , my intention is to contextualize it as a contemporary reinterpretation of the 17th century wax anatomical Venus . However , rather than merely mirroring clinical anatomical studies , this piece takes on a deeply personal dimension - it transforms into a familial memorial . The juxtaposition of the antique frame against the symbolic spine and the choice of materials invites viewers to reflect on the convergence of historical aesthetics and intimate narratives . In doing so , the artwork invites contemplation not only of the human form but also of the enduring connections and support structures within the context of personal relationships and how history is stored in the body .
